Our Locality
We have been making chairs and tables in Chipping, near Preston in Lancashire, for over 150 years. Located on the edge of the Bowland Fells in an outstandingly beautiful area, we consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have such a working environment. We employ many local people, some of whom are the second or third generation of local families to work with us. For those families, and for future generations, we feel we have a responsibility to preserve our local environment and to ensure that our operations continue to have only a positive impact on the local community.
The Situation Today
We have set up a fund to sponsor conservation initiatives and have established a tree nursery of 20,000 trees. We are working with local landowners to increase the area of British broadleaf woodland and we pledge that for every dining set purchased we will plant and care for an additional tree. We have restored the local mill pond and created several other ponds for wildlife.
Ongoing Projects
Last year alone we planted over 7,000 trees and in the coming years we expect to plan many thousands more broadleaf native trees. We also plan to build more ponds.
Our Aim
We aim to re-establish a large indigenous woodland of Oak, Ash, Alder, Birch, Hazel and others to “put the forest back into the Forest of Bowland”. In addition, through our involvement with conservation organisations we aim to encourage more partners to contribute to environmental initiatives and more landowners to consider planning trees.
